His novel Beauty is a Wound is a 20th century Indonesian historiography told in the rich folklore of her culture; in gothicism that awakens memories of Lafcadio Hearn's chilling Kwaidan: Stories and Studies of Strange Things ; in magic realism reminiscent of Gabriel Garcia Marquez's epic tale of Latin America, One Hundred Years of Solitude or Salman Rushdie's mesmerizing novel of India, Midnight's Children ; and in the taut rendering of wartime atrocities, it is more explicitly a depiction of abuse and violence against women as similarly narrated in Mo Yan's hallucinatory novel of China's history, Big Breasts and Wide Hips.

Far off at the edge of the South Seas, lies the port city Halimunda - the Land of Fog, so named by the beautiful, mythical princess Rengannis who pledged to marry the first person she saw at her window But there was no one as far as the eye could see, no one except a dog who was looking back over his shoulder in her direction after hearing the sound of the window creaking open. The princess was stunned for a moment but, remember, she never went back on her word, so from the bottom of her heart she promised she would marry that dog.

The novel represents 'Beauty' in both binary and opposing stories of Halimunda - a hypnotic land possessively controlled for 3 centuries by the Dutch; savagely violated by the hands of the Rising Sun; betrayed and abandoned by her two-faced 'friendly rescuers', and left exposed like a carcass to be devoured by homegrown wild dogs known as aka; and the multi-generational saga of Dewi Ayu - an exotic beauty of Dutch and Indo mixture, abducted and forced into the role of comfort woman for the Japanese, eventually becoming the most intoxicating prostitute in the village.

The 'demon seed' took root four times in Dewi Ayu's womb, the result was four 'beautiful' daughters. I should open my own whorehouse Thinking of nothing else, they held parties almost every night.

His male friends also adored him, because he never kept the girls to himself. And that was how they lived. In those years, Kliwon and his friends probably had the happiest lives of anyone in the city. I am reminded of the Roman empire and Caligula, with his orgies and feasts of splendor, albeit in this novel the scene of seventeen-year-old fornicating and living in the pleasure dome is nowhere extravagant, nonetheless symbolic of a life of conspicuous consumption.

Conclusion Cantik itu Luka by Eka Kurniawan In this brief writing about the craft of inventing a metaphor, I have focused on Chapter 7 of the novel pgs. This statement may seem to be deeply contradictory at many levels if one does not analyze deeper what the author wishes to convey.

Only in the last sentence of the page novel that Kurniawan reveled the reason behind the love for the ugliest human being in the town pg. In the end she is the only one who survived the epochal tragedy of epic proportion, paralleling the genealogical suffering of Indonesia as prostitute for the more than years leading to Independence.

How did Eka Kurniawan craft the novel to tell the story of the power of curse: of the natives on the Dutch, the latter the rapist, the sodomizer, the enslaver, and the breeder of prostitutes of young Javanese girls taken from the villages?

Herein lie the theme of deconstructionism, Absurdism, irony, 5 dark humor, satire, and a Quentin-Tarantino-Bakhtinian-Grotesque-carnivalesque style of crafting of the characters as well as the narrative arc.

FEATURED DOCUMENTS

Closed my eyes for a few minutes to first let a cognitive map of the style, form, and craft emerge, and next allow the memory of my childhood growing up in the village in which the Javanese culture although I am partly Bugis whose ancestry goes back directly-seven-generations to Raja Haji the rebel rouser of Sulawesi is a dominant feature of the inhabitants of my village in Majidee Johor Bahru.

Not because of the raw scenes of violence and rape but because I was just not invested in any of the characters.

I really didn't care about any of them! I also felt like the story moved from subplot to subplot in a really clunky but fast-paced way. Every few pages I felt like I was in a new story without finishing or even really engaging in the previous one.

Although the narrative was interesting in parts, the writing didn't draw me in and I just didn't believe I really struggled to finish this. Although the narrative was interesting in parts, the writing didn't draw me in and I just didn't believe most of it.

The "twist" ending, which perhaps might have explained away the overwrought treatment of the story's women, was ultimately unnecessary and did not benefit the story at all.

Like, dude?

Like, I mean, hold back.

The part could go and the story still have the same meaning. Aku juga mengira cerita ini akan banyak menceritakan tentang Cantik, namun, Cantik bahkan barely even there except in the first half and near the end of the book.

I think they are my favourite characters. Ini plot yang paling aku suka, itu sedih dan tragis but they know love and trying to be a good person for themselves and for each other.

JURNAL PENELITIAN, PENDIDIKAN, dan PEMBELAJARAN

Somehow, I see it that way when they lives surround with bad behaviour in that time. Satu hal lagi yang aku suka adalah the plot twist. Pengakuan-pengakuan Krisan di akhir buku. Walaupun aku masih ragu, is it really love, though?

So, i think the ending is good. Overall, this might not be my favourite, but I give this three stars because I really like Alamanda and Kliwon plot and others good parts plus historical stories.

Not a bad book, necessarily, but definitely a weird one. There were some truly excellent pieces in there, and I did enjoy the magical realism if that term is still appropriate to use that wound throughout the book, particularly the last half of it.

The female characters were all intriguing and had great promise, Dewi Ayu above all. Honestly I wish the book had just been about her -- she was by far the strongest, most interesting, and most compelling character. The book is ce What a weird book. The book is certainly epic in scale, and probably could have benefited both from an editor and a copyeditor orthographic mistakes here and there that were fairly egregious.

My main criticism was how unclear it was whose story the author was trying to tell. The rather shocking conclusion was completely sprung upon the reader, and I probably would have given the book a 3 were it not for the absolutely unexpected end. And I mean unexpected more negatively than positively. The end felt cheap and rushed.

Prosiding Prasasti

Eka Kurniawan spent a long time trying to make rapists sympathetic, and make it seem normal and okay that the male characters were unhinged at best Comrade Kliwon and generally horrible I never had a shred of sympathy for Shodancho.

The book was purportedly about Dewi Ayu and her descendants -- which the end definitely confirms that was the point -- but were it not for that weirdly tacked on end you could have fooled me that she and her daughters were the protagonists. The daughters had brief moments but were ultimately backgrounds on which the shitty men could project their inadequacies and iniquities onto.

Women did not have agency and were treated as disposable at best. In writing this review, I've come to the conclusion that I really disliked this book and I can't believe I actually slogged through the entire thing.

The ending has really embittered me to this book.

Beauty is a Wound is an allegory of Indonesia's bloody and violent colonialist past.

But that allegory is based on the reader having to read some odd pages of people raping women, topping it off with some pretty gory humour I can also recall some vore content in there. And the thing is, I'm pretty tired of reading about rape in fictional books without that discourse being explicitly about rape. It's not that great a plot device, and in fact it just gets to be a bit too much when you're surr Beauty is a Wound is an allegory of Indonesia's bloody and violent colonialist past.

It's not that great a plot device, and in fact it just gets to be a bit too much when you're surrounded by it all the time. I understand that was a point in how Indonesia was being "raped" by different countries, creating an amalgam of identities, all at conflict with each other. I just don't particularly understand how the publishers can market it as full of "badass women", when it's mostly a book about how they're too beautiful not to be raped allegory aside.

It gets a bit too disgusting, a bit too much. The writing style didn't make things better, it was a bit too disorganised, too floral - kept in an older storytelling style, yet it didn't do much for me when the content repelled me to that extent. DR; I'm incredibly interested in reading more about Indonesia's history, just not when it's written by Eka Kurniawan.

Publisher's Weekly said, "At the beginning of this English-language debut from Indonesian author Kurniawan, Dewi Ayu, who was once the most respected prostitute in the fictional coastal town of Halimunda, rises from her grave after being dead for two decades.

She's returned to pay a visit to her fourth daughter, Beauty, who is famously ugly.

What follows is an unforgettable, all-encompassing epic of Indonesian history, magic, and murder I started it bac Publisher's Weekly said, "At the beginning of this English-language debut from Indonesian author Kurniawan, Dewi Ayu, who was once the most respected prostitute in the fictional coastal town of Halimunda, rises from her grave after being dead for two decades.

I started it back in May Promising magic-realist opening, but it is really long, and had a hold then-new. Returned after a quick skim. Maybe I should try again? Or not. Take a look at Karen's review, https: Not for me! Dark and twisted, but complex 2.

This book made me feel incredibly complicated feelings. It was dark and sad and repulsive in some ways, but also compelling. To me, the novel addressed terrifying aspects of human nature that exist in our actual reality. The descriptions of horror, sexual and physical violence, and loss are reflective of atrocities that take place in our world even now.

I completely understand the reviews of people who DNF this book due to some of the subject matter. An Dark and twisted, but complex 2. And I agree at times the violence felt like too much, placed there for pure shock value.

But I also understand what the author was trying to do in pressing such horrifying topics throughout the book. I was promised a story about a prostitute and her daughters, but half the book is just about men around them. The synopsis is misleading af.

I don't care about Shodancho or Kliwon and the way the author wrote about his fantasy about beautiful women through his character. I know the story was set in s, but come on. He can do better than objectifying all the girls, no matter how beautiful he wrote them to be.

I want to give him credit for writing about sensitive topics like how Japanese sol I was promised a story about a prostitute and her daughters, but half the book is just about men around them. He also wrote about the independence through Indonesians' point of view. He wrote about the war against the communists, BUT the third rate lewd story that filled half the book just undo all his good intentions.

Just no. Thank you. Don't read this book. Indonesia "For hundreds of years, more than half of the face of this earth has been controlled by European countries and turned in to colonies, and the Europeans have sucked up whatever they could find, brought it all home, and made themselves rich.

But now they have just as much power as any other developed country, and so they are demanding their share. That is the origin of this war, a war between greedy nations.
