Yah, mungkin seperti judulnya, cantik itu luka, berbahagialah kalau kita jelek Saya sangat tersentuh pas bagian Kliwon jadi aktivis melawan cukong-cukong kapitalis yang mau membangun hotel, kemudian ia lepas dari hukuman hanya karena bekas pacarnya dulu, Alamanda, berjanji mau mencintai si penangkap Shodancho asal tidak membunuh Kliwon.
Kliwon yang akhirnya kebablasan tidur dengan Alamanda, yang juga adalah kakak iparnya, pulang disambut istrinya Adinda, yang mengaku dia tahu suaminya Kliwon telah tidur dengan kakaknya, tapi berkata, gak apa2, asal itu membuat Kliwon bahagia What a weird book. There were some truly excellent pieces in there, and I did enjoy the magical realism if that term is still appropriate to use that wound throughout the book, particularly the last half of it.
The female characters were all intriguing and had great promise, Dewi Ayu above all. Honestly I wish the book had just been about her -- she was by far the strongest, most interesting, and most compelling character. The book is ce What a weird book. The book is certainly epic in scale, and probably could have benefited both from an editor and a copyeditor orthographic mistakes here and there that were fairly egregious.
My main criticism was how unclear it was whose story the author was trying to tell. The rather shocking conclusion was completely sprung upon the reader, and I probably would have given the book a 3 were it not for the absolutely unexpected end. And I mean unexpected more negatively than positively. The end felt cheap and rushed.
Eka Kurniawan spent a long time trying to make rapists sympathetic, and make it seem normal and okay that the male characters were unhinged at best Comrade Kliwon and generally horrible I never had a shred of sympathy for Shodancho.
The book was purportedly about Dewi Ayu and her descendants -- which the end definitely confirms that was the point -- but were it not for that weirdly tacked on end you could have fooled me that she and her daughters were the protagonists. The daughters had brief moments but were ultimately backgrounds on which the shitty men could project their inadequacies and iniquities onto.
Women did not have agency and were treated as disposable at best. In writing this review, I've come to the conclusion that I really disliked this book and I can't believe I actually slogged through the entire thing.

I understand that was a point in how Indonesia was being "raped" by different countries, creating an amalgam of identities, all at conflict with each other. I just don't particularly understand how the publishers can market it as full of "badass women", when it's mostly a book about how they're too beautiful not to be raped allegory aside.
It gets a bit too disgusting, a bit too much. The writing style didn't make things better, it was a bit too disorganised, too floral - kept in an older storytelling style, yet it didn't do much for me when the content repelled me to that extent. Baru saja membaca beberapa halaman saya sudah tidak bisa melanjutkan membaca dikarenakan kevulgaran dan detail adegannya yang cenderung kasar serta tidak senonoh. Buku ini harusnya diberi tanda 21 tahun ke atas dikarenakan isinya yang begitu vulgar. Bisa dikatakan penulis pintar membuat alur cerita yang maju mundur.

This book made me feel incredibly complicated feelings. It was dark and sad and repulsive in some ways, but also compelling. To me, the novel addressed terrifying aspects of human nature that exist in our actual reality. The descriptions of horror, sexual and physical violence, and loss are reflective of atrocities that take place in our world even now.
