Within this. stack of unplayed rules and I've come to Trafalgar from Warhammer UPDATE: I only found pdf copies of the rules, not ship roster sheets.

The emphasis on the command of individual ships Command rolls supplant the Leadership checks of many other Warhammer-based systems means this is less a fleet level game and more a squadron level game.

The fleet lists at the back include plenty of detail on the smaller vessels of the period, which further leads me to speculate that Trafalgar was indeed written for smaller scale actions. It is not detailed enough for a ship to ship duel, but carries too much crunch for the Battle of the Nile.

It feels more like something you would play a hypothetical battle with, using no more than ships per side. This should get you a good afternoon's play.

It is also possible that you could create some of the less 'classic' actions from the period, for example supporting a coastal raid and becalmed ships being attacked by oared vessels in the Mediterranean. We were learning, so it took a while to get the first couple of turns away, but after that, as is always the case with these things, the game moved more quickly.

Wind is still important, as is holding the weather gauge. The usual tactics from the period seemed to work, with raking producing the most devastating damage on ships.

We have found in other games that the lead ship in an attacking line always seems to take the lion's share of the damage including the dangerous first broadsides , but once it breaches an enemy line, the following vessels can dish out masses of damage in response. You have to get raked a bit by enemy fire in order to do you own raking. In this game, one model represents one ship.

The standard unit of measure is the centimeter, although conversions are provided for larger and smaller models as well as a rough guide of using the half-inch instead of the centimeter for those requiring American measuring standards. A 4' x 4' or 4' x 6' table is recommended as a playing surface.


The turn sequence is conducted in four phases; weather phase, sailing phase, gunnery phase, and end phase.

The movement rules were clear and seem to be simple to play.

The rules cover such maneuvers as tacking, box hauling, anchoring, changing sail, effects of the sails settings on movement and collisions. The only maneuver than I didn't see specifically addressed was wearing ship.

Presumably this is done by simply turning the ship using normal movement rules. The ships seem to move a little fast by my calculations, but as I play more games I may change my opinion about this.

There are rules for boarding, shore batteries, mortars, collisions, ship's boats, fireships and other age-of-sail quirks.

My only complaint is record keeping.

Warhammer Historical Wargames

Naval and spaceship games are cursed by always incorporating millions of hit boxes and Trafalgar is no exception. It does have a clear, intuitive layout but there is no way you would refight Trafalgar without a lot of friends, and a complete weekend to spare. Verdict: I have yet to play it through properly, and it probably doesn't count the rivets as much as historical gamers might like, but the game system has a sound base in BFG so far as playability is concerned.

I have test-painted a ship or two but as my camera is not handy I will rather lazily link you to the excellent SteelonSand blog , as my paintjob is rather similar.

The model is rather blocky and I found I needed to rely on drybrushing a bit vaguely to kind of suggest detail, which worked a bit better than it sounds.Crew losses from fire and gunfire can take their toll, and before you know it, a fine fighting ship is nothing but a floating morgue.

Once you have the ships all you need is a blue bed sheet and some 28mm scale hills to use as islands and you're away.

I love this system. Critical hits can quickly pile up on a ship, particularly if you are caught in a crossfire, between two lines of enemy ships, as happened to me. The Scheltrum turtle boat was quite nice, though in his price booklet it seems like he refers to it as 15mm.
