Each year events such as this will continue to enthuse our young mathematicians. Children throughout the school took part in two sessions which were designed to demonstrate all areas of the maths curriculum. The first calculating session saw children solve a range of problems and completing treasure hunts to show the parents how children in Aloha learn to calculate and how this learning develops as the children progress through the school.

The second session exhibited many other areas of the curriculum such as statistics, measurement, geometry and ratio. There was a fantastic turn out of parents who went away with a better understanding of the teaching and learning of maths in Aloha.

Are there different types of learning? What is my preferred learning style?

How can I improve my learning? As a school, we now understand what it means to have a growth mindset and positively embrace learning challenges across all subjects. There have been outstanding examples of skillbased IPC homework projects brought into school and children have responded very enthusiastically to our new homework system which allows them to follow their own interests and develop their creativity.

Our international day was a culmination of what all the children had learned this year and a demonstration of international mindedness that is at the heart of everything we do. Laptops and iPads have become part of everyday life at Aloha College Primary school. Children from Year 3 upwards have received their own personal Aloha email addresses and are learning how to send and receive mail, as well as use Google Classroom to receive homework or class messages.

You can support at home by assisting your child How could we live without our smartphones, laptops, and other devices that allow us to go online? Technology forms a huge part of our lives these days and it is imperative that children are educated about the potential risks and problems. Online safety for KS2 pupils has formed a large part of our IT curriculum this year. Children also have access to a variety of online learning tools, such as Abacus maths, Education City, TT Rockstars and Manga High for the older children.

In FS1 we love storytime, especially our trips to the library. We now join in with the stories and always handle our books with care.

We are beginning to distinguish between letters and numbers and have been attempting to form them in lots of handson play activities. We have had lots of fun exploring our recently extended outdoor area; playing imaginatively and problem solving.

We really enjoy number songs and rhymes and can now proudly make marks to represent numbers.

During circle times we discuss and learn how important it is to be kind to our friends. We are now more able to take care of ourselves and work together to look after our learning environment. We have been fantastic chefs, super scientists, excellent explorers and creative artists. A highlight of the year has been the weekly music workshop in which we have learned a repertoire of songs, how to dance rhythmically and how to play a variety of musical instruments.

We have also thoroughly enjoyed our PE lessons with Miss Bronagh, in which we have learned to be good team players and to always try our best! We have learned many new skills and have become more responsible for our own learning. Over the year we have developed our academic skills. As readers we have learnt to decode texts, retell stories, discuss factual texts and how to retrieve information.

Our writing skills have greatly improved and we are now independently able to write factual and fictional pieces of writing. As mathematicians we have learnt how to work with numbers, shapes and measures.

Many of us have lost teeth or grown a few inches. We are blossoming into big boys and girls now! We have used ICT to deepen our understanding and worked effectively, independently and collaboratively.

We have enjoyed improving our awareness of targets and reflecting on our learning goals. As writers we have focused on including detail in our writing and are beginning to join our writing. As Mathematicians we have developed a range of strategies to support our calculations. We have particularly enjoyed using TTRS to apply these strategies to enhance our times tables knowledge.

As Scientists we have been planning and carrying out our own experiments.

These included investigating what food would attract the most ants and which material would make the best circus tent! How exciting! The highlight of the year was when the circus came to Aloha College for the day and we all got to take part, even some of the teachers! We focused on writing by using Vocabulary, Connectives, Openers and Punctuation VCOP to build and expand interesting sentences that would excite and engage the reader.

We met new authors who inspired us and none more than Roald Dahl. Mathematics taught us various methods to solve problems; column addition, grid multiplication and dividing by chunking. In history we learned about Egyptians and their artifacts, Greeks and their wonderful myths and Aztecs and their association with the origin of chocolate. Of course we used our Science classes to make and sample our own chocolate recipes In geography, map reading and using coordinates to locate local and international places was fascinating.

We loved Year 3!

We began by discovering how we learn best and have taken this knowledge with us throughout the year, using our visual, auditory and kinesthetic skills with a growth mindset. Our adventures have inspired our English reading and writing and we now use VCOP vocabulary, connectives, openers and punctuation to help us. We experimented with using new learning methods in maths to solve challenging problems.

Travel has been a key feature of our learning this year, taking us through time and space, visiting Ancient Egypt and the planets, as well as following the journey of a cacao bean from Mexico to Marbella.

The children especially enjoyed learning about the plays of William Shakespeare and J. We believe that developing their mental maths skills is 46 ALOHA COLLEGE very important and apart from daily sessions these are reinforced by the use of online activties allocated by the teachers which they can access at home. In IPC lessons the children have covered a range of subjects. In Science the children have enjoyed investigating forces and making electrical circuits and doing a variety of tests on rocks and soils.

In Geography the children developed their mapping skills and learned about biomes and climate change in addition to investigating natural disasters and their causes. In History lessons the children learned about myths and legends from different countries and across different periods.

They have risen to the challenge yet again and have demonstrated their commitment towards becoming lifelong learners. The children have proven to be successful through using their imagination and creativity, tackling new experiences and learning from them.

Many progress to joining the Spanish as First Language groups. The children started our story as explorers searching for patterns and they showed everyone that you can find patterns in nature. We had dancing zebras with a black and white pattern.

Our deep sea divers found shape patterns on our shimmering fish. Then we had a fantastic fashion show where the children confidently modelled patterned clothes on the catwalk.

We also looked at how to create patterns in our writing, using squiggle and wiggle, and the children demonstrated the moves.

Then we used our ears to listen for a pattern and our alligators led a pattern clapping dance. To finish our show we all sang a song about patterns and it was great to see the audience join in with the actions. In their wonderful assembly, Old MacDonald took the audience on a tour of his farm proudly showing off his farm yard animals, home grown vegetables and tasty fruits.

We were then transported to a restaurant where the customers were served foods from Italy, Spain and England. With clear narration, beautiful singing and brilliant dancing, this was a fantastic example of team work and effort by all of the FS2 children. The audience of proud Mummies and Daddies especially loved the video where children were tasting sour fruit!

Well done superstars! During our assembly we showcased some of our talents. The talents we displayed were ballet dancing, drawing and painting, racing driving, running, playing football, guitar playing and singing.

The children performed these skills enthusiastically through the media of dance and drama. At the end of our assembly the children challenged the other pupils in the school to think about what talents they possess.

We all learned a very important message - that these talents should not be wasted and we must keep practising them to become even better! The Queen stopped the annual Ugly Bug Ball from going ahead until her crown was back. Three reluctant insects: the grasshopper, ladybird and butterfly took on the brave job of retrieving it.
